Community Service with a connection to the military?

Today, I had an experience with a soldier in the local grocery store, I shook his hand and I thanked him for everything he has done for our country. The look on his face was of complete shock like no one had ever said that to him before. I started thinking that perhaps we take our soldiers for granted. I need to do a community service project to graduate from high school and I started think is there anyway I can do something for the military. I have personal ties to the military; many members of my family have served, my boyfriend plans on serving, and a friend of mine is leaving for the Navy in a few days. Does anyone have an suggestions or know of any reputable organizations? There is a veterans hospital in a nearby town as well as an Air Force base, so I have considered speaking to them. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
